How to Use a Reed Diffuser: Reeds, Flips and Finding the Right Spot

A straightforward guide to setting up a reed diffuser, choosing how many reeds to use, fixing a faint scent and knowing when to replace the sticks.

· 7 min read

Three square reed diffusers with sticks on a white surface, with a decorative lantern and a boxed diffuser behind them.

To use a reed diffuser, remove the cap, put the reeds into the fragrance liquid and leave them to draw it up. Start with a few reeds, add more if you want a stronger smell, and flip them when the scent fades. There is no flame and nothing to plug in. The details that make the difference are the number of reeds, the spot you choose and knowing when the sticks need replacing.

How does a reed diffuser work?

Reed diffuser sticks draw fragrance liquid up from the bottle, and the scent evaporates from their exposed surfaces into the room. More reeds give the liquid more surface area to evaporate from, so you can adjust how noticeable it is without changing the fragrance.

Unlike an oil burner, a reed diffuser does not warm its contents. You set it down and let it work. That makes it a good choice if you want a steady background scent rather than something you turn on for an evening. If you would rather choose exactly when fragrance fills the room, our guide to using an oil burner explains that method instead.

How to set up a reed diffuser

Set-up is simple, but take a moment to choose its home before you open the bottle. Fragrance liquid is much easier to keep off furniture while it is still sealed.

  1. Choose a stable spot. Pick somewhere the bottle will not be knocked by someone reaching for a book or opening the curtains, with space above it for the reeds. Put a protective tray or coaster underneath, particularly on varnished wood.
  2. Open the bottle. Remove the outer cap and any inner stopper or seal. Keep the bottle upright while you do it.
  3. Add a few reeds. Spread them slightly rather than bunching them tightly together. The Rhubarb Rhubarb reed diffuser, with its rhubarb, apple, pear and raspberry fragrance, comes with fibre reeds that go into the bottle once the cap is removed.
  4. Let the liquid travel. Give the reeds time to draw it up. Resist the urge to keep pulling them out to check; if the bottle has found a good spot, leave it there.
  5. Adjust the scent. Add a reed if the fragrance is too faint, or remove one if it is stronger than you want. Put any spare, unused reeds somewhere clean and dry.

Prefer something that looks less like a row of sticks? The Carnation diffuser flowers on reeds have cream sola wood petals that draw fragrance up from a bottle. The set contains four flowers; you will need a diffuser bottle and fragrance oil separately.

How many reeds should you use?

Start with a few reeds, then change the number to suit the room and how strong you want the scent. There is no single correct count: a small room may need fewer, while a larger room may call for more. Give each change a little time before deciding it has made no difference.

Using every reed at once is tempting, especially if they arrived in a neat bundle. It also means more liquid evaporates, so the bottle may empty sooner. Start modestly. You can add another stick far more easily than you can put fragrance back in the bottle.

Reed thickness and material vary too. The Black Fibre Reed Diffuser sticks are 25cm long and 3mm thick. If you replace your original sticks with a different kind, adjust the number by how the scent feels in your room rather than assuming the old count will give the same result.

When should you flip reed diffuser sticks?

Flip the reeds when the scent becomes faint and you want a fresh release of fragrance. You can try it occasionally as part of your usual tidy-up, but you do not need to follow a strict calendar. More frequent flipping can make the liquid disappear faster.

Lift the reeds carefully, turn them over above the bottle and put the dry ends into the liquid. Keep a tissue handy for drips and wash your hands afterwards. If the scent is already noticeable, leave them alone. The diffuser has done its job without requiring a small weekly ceremony.

Where should a reed diffuser go?

Put a reed diffuser where air moves gently through the room, but not beside an open window, fan or radiator. A little circulation carries the scent; a strong draught can whisk it away, while heat can make the liquid evaporate faster.

An entryway shelf or a side table away from foot traffic can work well. For a lighter scent in a bedroom or living room, the Lemon Verbena Essential Oil Reed Diffuser offers a fresh, sweet citrus fragrance in a 200ml bottle. Place any bottle where it is unlikely to be brushed by a sleeve or curious hand. A narrow windowsill might look tidy until someone opens the curtains.

Why can't I smell my reed diffuser any more?

A faint diffuser does not always need replacing. Check the room, the reeds and your own familiarity with the scent before you change the liquid.

Other people can smell it, but you can't

You may have become used to the smell. Step into another room for a while and notice the scent when you return, or ask someone who has just come in. If it is still there, you may not need to change anything.

The reeds look soaked, but the scent is weak

Older reeds can become less effective as fragrance residue builds up. Try one careful flip. If that makes little difference and there is still liquid in the bottle, replace the reeds with fresh ones rather than pouring more liquid over the old set.

The scent disappears near a window or radiator

Move the bottle somewhere with gentler airflow and away from heat. Give it time in the new spot before adding more reeds. Otherwise you may end up with a stronger scent than you wanted once the draught is gone.

How do you refill a reed diffuser?

Use a refill intended for your diffuser, and swap in fresh reeds if the old ones have stopped carrying the scent well. Take the bottle to a protected surface, remove the reeds, and pour carefully. Wipe any drips from the outside before putting it back.

The Agnes + Cat Pressed Peonies Reed Diffuser Refill is a 150ml top-up for an existing Agnes + Cat reed diffuser, with a sweet, powdery floral scent. If you are changing fragrances, clean and dry the bottle first and use new reeds so the old scent does not linger in them.

Do not assume fragrance oil for another device belongs in a reed diffuser. Oil burners use heat and follow different instructions; diffuser liquid needs to be suitable for use with reeds. Do not add water to a ready-made reed diffuser unless its own instructions tell you to.

Safety basics

  • Keep the bottle and liquid out of reach of children and pets, and follow the instructions on its packaging.
  • Protect furniture, especially varnished wood. Wipe up spills promptly, and keep liquid away from fabrics and painted surfaces.
  • Keep the diffuser away from candles, other flames and heat sources.
  • Avoid getting liquid on your skin or in your eyes. Wash your hands after handling wet reeds.

Reed diffuser FAQs

Do you need to flip reed diffuser sticks?

No. Flip them if the scent has faded and you want a stronger release, but a diffuser can work without regular flipping. If turning them stops making a difference, try new reeds.

Can you use fewer reeds than come with the diffuser?

Yes. Fewer reeds usually mean a subtler scent and slower evaporation. Start with a few, then add more if the room needs them.

Can you reuse reed diffuser sticks with a new scent?

Fresh reeds are the better choice when changing scents. Used sticks hold on to the previous fragrance and may not carry the new liquid as well.

Where to start

Choose a stable, protected spot, begin with a few reeds and adjust only after you have lived with the scent for a bit. Flip them when the fragrance fades; replace them if flipping no longer helps. You can find bottles and refills in our room sprays and reed diffusers collection.
