From the Greek amethystos, "not intoxicated" the ancient Greeks believed it kept the wearer sober.
Will amethyst fade?
It can pale if left in strong direct sunlight for long periods, so it's best kept out of a sunny window when you're not wearing it.

Parcels up to 2kg go by Royal Mail and arrive 2 to 5 working days after dispatch; heavier ones go by next-day courier.
